This workshop aims to explore questions in urban and regional economics through the lens of unconventional, big data sources with a high level of spatial granularity.   Submissions from early-career researchers, including PhD students are strongly encouraged.

The keynote lecture will be delivered by Gilles Duranton (Real Estate Department, The Wharton School).

This workshop aims to explore questions in urban and regional economics through the lens of unconventional, big data sources with a high level of spatial granularity. These sources include (confidential) data from firm collaborations and online platforms, satellite /aerial imagery, GPS and call detail records (CDR), historical archives, credit card transactions, street-level photgraphy, sensor outputs, transport data, or detailed historical maps and data.  We are especially interested in innovative methods, including but not limited to machine learning approaches, to compile and analyze extensive datasets, which enhance our understanding of the spatial origination and development of cities and regions.

Submissions from early-career researchers, including PhD students are strongly encouraged. Contributions that are methodological or empirical in nature are welcome, provided they use big datasets.  While extended abstracts or early-stage drafts will be taken into consideration, complete papers will be given preference.

Accommodation will be provided for authors of selected papers; a limited amount of travel grants for early-career researchers are available on request.

The workshop is supported by: KonsortWD project "Access to firm data" and CRC TRR190 Rationality and Competition.
