Three positions at the Department of Economics, Econometrics & Finance (Assistant/Associate Professor (tenuretrack))

The Department of Economics, Econometrics & Finance is an active and international research group, consisting of approximately 50 people. Members are working both in fundamental theoretical research as well as in applied research. Central research themes are among others industrial organisation, (applied) econometrics, banking, aging and pensions, microfinance, and economic history. Approximately 20% of the department members is non-Dutch, support staff is used to communicating in English. More than 80% of the PhD students are non-Dutch. Members of the department have published in a wide range of top journals, such as American Economic Review, Journal of Public Economics, Journal of Econometrics, Journal of Economics and Business Statistics, RAND Journal of Economics, and Review of Economics and Statistics.
The department is responsible for central courses in two Bachelor programs: the independent BSc program in Econometrics and Operations Research, and the Economics and Business Economics BSc program. These are all taught in English. In addition, the department is directly involved in the MSc programs in Economics, Econometrics, Operations Research and Actuarial Science, and Finance. The department also participates in the selective honours program for BSc students, and the challenging 2-years Research Master program, that is intended for students aiming at a PhD.
2. Tasks and responsibilities (job description):
Currently the department has three vacant tenure track positions. Candidates are expected to strengthen the position of the Department of Economics, Econometrics & Finance.The department offers a dynamic academic environment with excellent research facilities.
Candidates have the ability to conduct high quality, original research and to publish in high-ranked international journals. Time for research is allocated according to standardized faculty procedures, which guarantee 50% time for research during the tenure track period. Responsibilities include teaching in the bachelor and master programs offered by the department. All MSc programs are taught in English.
Position 1 - Vacancy number 212167
Microeconomics. We seek a researcher with an interest and excellent research skills in the fields of microeconomics or applied industrial organization. Successful candidates actively contribute to research and teaching in these areas. Preference will be given to applicants who have experience in either conducting lab or field experiments and/or in analyzing empirical data-sets using modern microeconometric techniques.
Position 2 and 3 - Vacancy number 212168-69
Econometrics. The candidates must have a broad and outstanding knowledge of econometrics and its applications to economic problems. Teaching will be in the fields of econometrics, statistics, and actuarial science. Successful candidates actively contribute to research and teaching in these areas. Considering the composition of the department, one of the candidates has specialized in time series econometrics.
We will interview at the ASSA meeting in San Diego (January 2013) and the RES job market in London (January 2013).
To qualify candidates should have:Ph.D. in Economics (position 1) or Econometrics, Quantitative Economics, or Statistics, (positions 2 and 3) or a related discipline; Expertise in the field of Microeconomics (position 1) or Econometrics (position 2 and 3), demonstrated by evidence of ability (or demonstration of potential) to publish international academic publications, preferably in top tier or very good, peer-reviewed journals. Proven interest and ability in developing courses and teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level and in mentoring students; International network; Organizational qualities and excellent communication skills; The potential to generate external funding for research projects.
Tenure track positions at the Faculty of Economics and Business are temporary positions subject to a tenure decision after the period of six years. Formal tenure track requirements include criteria with respect to research prominence, teaching and external funds raising activities. During the tenure track period 50% of the position is reserved for research and 50% is devoted to teaching activities.
3. Employment conditions
The University of Groningen offers a salary depending on qualifications and work experience starting from a minimum of € 3,195 gross per month (salary scale 11) to a maximum of € 4,970 gross per month (salary scale 12) for a full-time position, excluding 8% holiday allowance and 8,3% end-of-year bonus and participation in a pension scheme for employees.
You will be appointed for a period of six years, on condition of a positive mid-term evaluation in the third year of employment. On the basis of a positive final evaluation in the sixth year of employment, you will be granted tenure.
We expect candidates to start by August 2013.
