Location of Job opening

We invite applications for a one-year post-doctoral position in environmental economics based at the University of Ottawa (possible extension to two years). The researcher will become a key member of a research team of senior scholars from the universities of Ottawa, Vanderbilt, and Montreal as well as Resources for the Future and the OECD.

The successful candidate will be based at the University of Ottawa's Institute of the Environment, an inter-disciplinary research center. S/he will work closely with the Department of Economics and the Faculty of Law, as well as Sustainable Prosperity, Canada's leading green economy research network and think-tank (based at the Institute of the Environment).

The successful candidate will have a unique opportunity to provide research leadership on two distinct projects. The first project comprises a meta-analysis on the links between environmental regulation, innovation and productivity (the "Porter Hypothesis"); the second involves cutting-edge empirical research on the role of natural capital productivity in Canada and worldwide. These projects are expected to generate publications in top-tiered economic journals, yield a series of high profile policy papers, and inform policy-makers in Canada and other countries.

Applicants must have completed the requirements for a PhD in economics or equivalent degree, or be on track to do so by September 1, 2012. Solid research experience in environmental, resource, productivity, competitiveness and/or innovation issues (economic aspects) is preferred but not essential. We are particularly interested in candidates who possess first-rate econometric and quantitative skills. Experience with meta-analysis would be helpful but is not required. Strong writing ability is also an asset.

Candidates will receive a competitive salary and, if desired, will have an opportunity to teach in the Department of Economics. Preferred start date is between April 1 and July 1, 2012.

Interested individuals are asked to submit: (1) cover letter outlining their interest in this position and core qualifications; (2) current curriculum vitae and list of completed graduate courses (transcripts not required); (3) writing sample; (4) contact information for three references including names, phone numbers and email addresses. All application documents and any questions can be directed to Brandon Schaufele, Research Director, Institute of the Environment, University of Ottawa. Review of applications begins on February 15, 2012 and continues until a suitable candidate is found.
