DTU Transport invites applications for a 3-year Ph.D. position starting spring of 2012. The Ph.D. project is financed by the Danish Council for Strategic Research, DTU Transport, and DTU within the IRUC research project focusing on intelligent road user charging (for more information see the IRUC project website: http://www.dtu.dk/subsites/iruc/english.aspx).
The Ph.D. project concerns the development of congestion models and dynamic route choice models. As existing models of congestion are conceptually fairly simple, in contrast with the complexity of reality, it is essential to investigate advanced congestion models able to account for a range of phenomena that could be very important for determining the policy response to congestion. Specifically, bottleneck or flow congestion technologies will enable developing dynamic models of congestion to account for a range of phenomena. Moreover, dynamic route choice models will consider how queues evolve and disappear over the rush hours by studying an optimal path algorithm, estimated choice functions allowing for individual heterogeneity, and drawing from empirical evidence from the work package of the project focusing on queue spill backs. The equilibrium concept is stochastic user equilibrium.
The Ph.D. project will be carried out under the supervision of Professor Otto Anker Nielsen and Associate Professor Carlo Giacomo Prato, and it will provide opportunities to collaborate with world renowned leading researchers on the topic.
Candidates must have a master degree in transportation engineering, econometrics, mathematics, or equivalent academic qualifications, preferable with some experiences with transport modelling. Candidates are expected to be able to develop empirical and theoretical contributions to the subject and to have good command of the English language.
Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the Ph.D. degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled at the DTU Transport Ph.D. School. The candidate will be part of the Transport Modelling and Planning Section at DTU Transport.

The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current Danish rules for Ph.D. degree students.
